This is what I've done for now (just added the gcc-multilib dependency).

I'm open to either dropping or keeping lib64ext2fs-nopic.a; I'll leave that up 
to you good folks on the MIPS list.   On the one had it increases the time to 
build e2fsprogs on the MIPS build's, and it uses more space to install 
e2fslibs-dev.  On the other it would take some effort to determine for certain 
whether removing that library would cause problems or not.
