Your timing is perfect. Just today a discussion launched on gentoo lists about whether to stop building mips1 stage tarballs. So it would seem gentoo at least can provide you a bootstrap environment - for now. Everyone else has more or less moved on to mips3 or later for their ready to run binaries.
