Hi Louis, > If I write you today, it's because we are trying to make possible a free > tablet computer for schools.
If I may offer a perspective as a distro developer and parent of a 12-year-old whose school has an ineffective netbook deployment, it's not really about the hardware. In my view, schools need a robust authentication and cloud storage system before they need tablets for every child. Individual specialist computers are quickly lost, damaged or obsolete. They also get expensive for large families to buy and keep replacing. What I would suggest is that you consider a single-sign-on system with some form of hardware token, like a USB pendant. Then develop your educational resources using open web technologies so that they can be accessed from any device the child has access to (school, home, library etc). Use the money saved on hardware to hire programmers and designers to enhance the educational resources. Then for the kids who are interested in programming, buy used Thinkpads in bulk and install Debian on them. A two-year-old Thinkpad is a much better computer for learning than a tablet (it actually has a keyboard you can type on!), costs about the same or less, and you'll be recycling too. Cheers!
