-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hello Debian community,
First of all sorry to CC so many of you but I don't know who is on debian-multimedia list. During some discussion in ITP bug #777220 it came to attention to some members of our community that we have many packages that provide similar service to our users. There are some inputs on combining packages that provide those services and/or rewrite parts of it into some universal library. Basic idea of this mail thread is to gather all Debian maintainers of those packages and other interested parties in this field. There is basic wiki page [0] on which we have listed packages (and some additional info) which should be the main page of our end effort - to gather our upstream in this field and to see if we can manage to combine those upstream communities into one bigger community. For the start it would be nice if you could share these informations regarding your packages: - - is upstream still alive? - - how active is it? - - do we have good relations with them? If not, why? - - what should be added/removed in our table? - - what features should we compare to keep it clean and simple? So we don't create too much irrelevant information to parse and this isn't competition of package features. - - other ideas (rewrite intro sentences to improve and make more clear our idea, make the effort more public via news feeds, starting drafts on our intro mail to upstream developers). I know this is a huge deal, but there is no gain if we don't try and I believe Debian can lead this effort that could result in the end a better code for upstream developers and contributors (some of which are maybe part of Debian already and others that will join) and a better more unified end software for all users in Free software ecosystem. Bonus point of discussion is to create an sleek UI frontend for such software. Please, bring your positive energy and constructive attitude into this discussion so we can make progress in more rapid way.
