I have never used ardour, but maybe the following alternatives could be noteworthy. For audio editing: lmms and kdenlive, although the latter is more aimed at video editing, but I have used it as well for audio composition. Alternative DAWs could be puredata and bespokesynth, the latter is in NEW.
