Key is ok
Check for key expire stuff
Key has no expiration date set, nothing to check.

   Applicant writes (in July 2005):

8<--------------------------------------------------------------------
I originally started using GNU/Linux with a boxed set of RedHat 5.2 in
order to create a firewall/NAT router when I lived at home with my
parents and had dial-up connectivity. Shortly after going to University
to study medicine, I started helping with the LinuxFromScratch project
(http://www.linuxfromscratch.org) which I got involved with in order
to improve my knowledge of how the various components of GNU/Linux
systems fitted together. After helping out with editing the LFS book
for a while, I started the Beyond LinuxFromScratch project (as can be
seen in my original forward to the document
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/stable/preface/preface.html)
which was designed to help people move forward from the base +
development system of LFS and improve their knowledge of what packages
were available. I stood down from editing BLFS for three principle
reasons. First, I had started using Debian on most of my machines and
so was spending less time testing the *LFS instructions. Second, I was
unable to devote that much time to the task at that moment in time due
to excessive amounts of University work and third, I was getting to the
point where 'just' writing documentation was becoming routine and I
wanted to start dealing with code a lot more.

My introduction to the ideals of Free Software came about towards the
beginning of my period working on LFS when I first read the GNU
manifesto and started to read and compare the various major licenses
(the GNU GPL and LGPL, the modified and original BSD licenses) and
started to understand the differences between free software, open source
and the concept of 'copyleft'. During the time I was editing LFS,
somebody pointed me at the DFSG as another standard of 'freeness'.

As I mentioned above, I started using Debian whilst still editing the
LFS book. I liked the package management system and the ease with which
I could have systems which mixed a stable base with a more up-to-date set
of other packages. At the time I was using mutt as a news reader and
found that creating my own local patched mutt-nntp package by following
the new maintainer guide and developers reference was useful, rather
than just compiling and installing to /usr/local as I retained the
integration the mutt package has with the system. At the current time,
I maintain debian systems at my parents house, several development boxes
at home and two of our main lab servers use Debian, with the rest
scheduled to move sometime before the end of the year. I also admin a
Mac OS X cluster and desktops which will hopefully move to Debian once
we have evaluated alternatives for the various scientific software which
is needed. This will involve a new LGPL/GPL'd application for medical
imaging data analysis which is my main work task starting from the end of
August.

At the present time I maintain kst and ifrit in Debian and am in the
process of packaging dssi. kst is a scientific data plotter for KDE
which has plugin and real-time support for various instruments. I first
came across it when preparing some data plots at work and realised that
it wasn't in Debian. ifrit is another plotting package but is used for
3d rendering of volumes, surfaces and particles. ifrit is based on VTK
and Qt and has been an interesting lesson in dealing with upstream (to
do with licensing issues during my initial pre-packaging audit; now all
dealt with) and other Debian developers; i.e. the vtk Debian maintainer
(see bug #271779) and the buildd maintainers (see bug #273375).
dssi (ITP: #280165) is slightly more complicated and I have been
working with the rosegarden4 maintainer (who wishes to build-dep on it)
in order to make sure that the packages can exist in a sane way when the
API changes (for instance when version 1.0 is released instead of the
current 0.9). In fact the major delay at the moment for dssi packages
is waiting for feedback from package maintainers who will depend on
dssi. Test packages have been available at mentors.debian.net for a
while and I'm about to update them with regard to libjack dependencies
in sid and, given that there are no objections to the package structure,
upload them. I want to be careful with this package as causing problems
could well cause other packages to break.

I intend my future involvement in Debian to be in a couple of major
areas. First, I met Andreas Tille at Debconf5 and discussed the
Debian-Med project with him. Part of Debian-Med is to do with medical
imaging (MRI, fMRI, MEG, EEG etc) which happens to be my main research
interest (http://www.nl.debian.org/devel/debian-med/imaging)
The first package I'm looking at is the Amide DiCOM viewer
(http://amide.sourceforge.net/) which I am currently performing a
license audit on. Another interest of mine in Debian is the multiarch
proposal as I have an amd64 box at home and a large number of ppc64
boxes at work. I hope to contribute to the discussion and the
implementation of multiarch having talked to Tollef about it at both
Fosdem and Debconf this year. I started creating and incorporating
some multiarch patches for base and required packages
(http://62.3.98.42/~mark/debian/multiarch_patches/) but these got out
of date as I was managing them manually. I now intend to start using
tla or baz to manage these changes and am currently working my way
through the tla tutorial so that I fully understand revision control.

From Google, I can see that Mark has been active in Linux from Scratch.
He has also participated on many technical mailing lists, asking and
answering questions and reporting bugs in what I consider good and
considerate style.

2. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
Mark Hymers has a good understanding of Debians Philosophy and
Procedures. He responded to all my Questions about Social Contract,
DFSG, BTS etc. with what I can only describe as excellent answers,
and clearly demonstrated his interest and understanding of the issues.

3. Tasks and Skills
-------------------

Mark Hymers maintains the following packages in Debian:
ifrit - a powerful tool for visualizing 3-dimensional data sets
kst - a KDE application used for displaying scientific data
     zope-ldapmultiplugins - LDAP plugin for Zope/Plone
zope-ldapuserfolder - LDAP user and group source for Zope/Plone

and comaintains the following Debian package:
freeradius - a high-performance and highly configurable RADIUS server

He has been sponsored by Wesley Landaker and Stephen Gran.

I reviewed the kst and ifrit packages in April, and found them to be in good
   shape.

He also answered my other Questions regarding T&S in an
   outstanding manner.

4. Recommendation
-----------------
I strongly recommend to accept him as a Debian Developer.
