2. Background
-------------
Applicant writes:
My first contact with GNU/Linux was around 2000. That was little more
than playing with it. In 2002, however, I saw a whole research institute
running on Debian and was really impressed -- not having realized the
possibilities before. In 2003 I became a 100% Debian user.
After I finished my diploma and moved on to do a PhD in neuroscience it
felt logical to do that kind of research on Debian systems too. But I
had to discover that there was very little support for this at that
time. The aforementioned research institute needed a whole IT department
to get the job done, but unfortunately they did not contribute their
efforts back to Debian.
I had to find a way to fix this, but soon learned that the former Custom
Debian distributions (now Debian Pure Blends) were already there to
address the problem of tailoring Debian to a specific use case without
having to fork/derive or otherwise duplicate existing work.
Together with fellow developer Yaroslav Halchenko I started packaging
software for experimental psychology and neuroimaging research, and got
slowly sucked into the Debian Med/Science universe. I had my first new
Debian package accepted in the archive in 2005. Today there are some
more, although it gets increasingly difficult to count if the main focus
is the team.
http://qa.debian.org/[email protected]
Over time we also created pkg-expsy on alioth that hosts most of our
packaging work. In 2009 I became DM to be able to work more
independently -- although I still find the forced package peer-review
beneficial for the overall quality of Debian packages.
At some point, there was a good set of packages in the archive (thanks to
everybody in Debian Med and Science) and yet "nobody" used them. It
turned out that neuroscientists just didn't know enough about what
impressive feature-set Debian has to offer for them. Therefore I wrote
some bits of code using the newly available UDD, DDE and the Debian
Blends task files to generate a tailored view of Debian for neuro
people:
http://neuro.debian.net
Yaroslav and me also started going to scientific conferences to talk about
Debian and advertise it in the "neuro-software" sphere, e.g.
http://www.nitrc.org/projects/neurodebian
In November 2010 NeuroDebian will run its first Debian booth at a large
neuroscientific conference
http://www.debian.org/News/2010/20101007
promoting the upcoming release and its exciting features for researchers.

3. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
Michael has a good understanding of Debian's philosophy and procedures
and answered all my questions about the social contract,
DFSG, BTS, etc. in a good way. Michael committed to uphold the SC and DFSG
in his Debian work and accepts the DMUP.
4. Tasks and Skills
-------------------
Michael has a good understanding of the technical side of Debian.
Michael is maintainer of many packages, mostly uploaded by himself as DM.
All packages that I checked are in good shape.
Michael also answered mine and adn's other questions regarding T&S without
problems and provided patches for RC bugs.
He also has an impressive minechangelog trail.
5. Recommendation
-----------------
I recommend to accept Michael as a Debian Developer.
Ciao,
Enrico
