I followed Warren's excellent advice :

ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/encodings.dir
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/encodings.dir
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/fonts.dir
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts.dir
ln -s /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/fonts.scale
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts.scale

+ commenting out the truetype fontpath in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Now, Openoffice is running properly again, but at the price of banning
Truetype fonts. Has anyone managed to solve the problem and not lose the
fonts ?
