I upgraded from openoffice 1.0.1 to openoffice 1.1. (Actually, I
reinstalled my linux box from scratch; my homedir is on a fileserver,
and it had been used with openoffice 1.0.1.) when I ran oowriter for
the first time, openoffice went off to upgrade my ~/.openoffice
directory. It did not prompt me, but if it had, I likely would have
said yes.
It appears that under openoffice 1.0.1, $HOME/.openoffice/user/work is
a symlink to $HOME. The upgrade tool ("setup") traverses
$HOME/.openoffice and applies some algorithm to everything it finds.
It doesn't stop at the symlink, and therefore applies this algorithm
to the entire homedir.
At the very least, all empty directories seem to be gone. Some number
of other files are also gone, but it's difficult to tell why it chose
to delete what it did. One critical side effect is that some
important empty directories in my courier ~/Maildir directory were
removed. New mail delivery doesn't work any more, and there are other
problems with mail reading, as well. I'm not sure what else might be
broken that I haven't found yet.
One silver lining is that the setup tool logs what it's done in
$HOME/.openoffice/setup.log. I have included the files in user/work
which were affected, except some directories and files whose names
were sensitive.
