(Italian l10n list CC'ed...as this seems related to the localisation somewhere)

No..:-)

Indeed since that error showed up, I had my test box runnig a few
other installs, exactly the same ones...but in other languages.

In all cases, but italian, the install went OK. I retried an Italian
install just a few minutes ago and the install failed again with the
exact same problem.

So, I suspect that changing to Engish would trigger no error at all.

The difference lies in the language tasks. When one does a scratch
install with d-i and choose the desktop task, the <language> and
<language>-desktop tasks are added to the desktop task.

I suspect that one of the packages in the italian-desktop task is
triggering this problem by some nasty dependency problem.
