The application wiki template was only updated[1] for GSoC 2018 on 17
March (during the application period) and various comments have been
made about whether it is necessary or not over the last few weeks.

On the main page[2], the line about using that template is currently
commented out and has been that way during 2017[3] too:

## When applying, follow the instructions ...

Google also provide a mechanism for putting a template in their portal
and we may want to explore that for 2019. Outreachy also has their own
template these days, I don't know whether it is better for us to try and
ask to have extra fields added there rather than expecting applicants to
fill out multiple forms.

For 2018, I don't know if it is correct to expect students to complete
the template before the March 27 deadline from Google. The essential
thing students need to do before the deadline on March 27 is submit the
application through the GSoC Portal:

If we want the application template completed on the wiki as well, then
based on the things pointed out above, I feel we should give students an
extra few days to do that so they don't get distracted from the Google
system.

Daniel
