/mnt is *only* for temporary mounts, and should be left into local sysadm domain, as it is for /usr/local, it has already been said. I agree that populating / with "random" mountpoints (what for who has two CD drivers, or two floppyes, and maybe a zip/jazz?) is ugly. I would prefere to use /var/mnt/* for this purpose.
