Blech, I was wrong here, for which I apologize. The FHS does contain such a promise. I believe it shouldn't, but I understand why it does. All I can say is that the GNU Coding Standards specified a clean and workable solution, which was ignored by the FHS drafters; then later when they realized it was important, they kludged the same solution together in a much less elegant way. Which we are, apparently, unfortunately, stuck with. Thomas
