I think it is also a good thing to propose upstreams to not do this
madness by default. In many support channels the first thing you often
have to ask it to get a proper build log. Defaults of build systems
should be tailored towards users, not towards developers.

I think cmake has the additional problem that it misses a proper middle
ground, without verbosity it is says not nearly enough, with verbosity
it gives quite more output than a classic automake like build system.
