That implies dpkg should do that too for conffiles, which it does not currently, while I think I agree it should, and I also agree with Ian's comment about needing to consider this carefully in: <http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=330256#86> I'd be happy to implement this for dpkg 1.17.x, if people do not see any obvious downside.
