You could edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, with something like:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic Video Card"
Driver "radeon"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
BusID "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection
This is what works for my on my powerbook G4, so it could be a starting
point for you.
