I got the same error with xpmac but managed to get it to work by making sure ALL the following fonts were present:
ii xfonts-100dpi 3.3.6-1 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 3.3.6-1 75 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-base 3.3.6-1 standard fonts for X ii xfonts-scalabl 3.3.6-1 scalable fonts for X After that, the Rage 128 accelerated Xpmac worked flawlessly on my 7300 with a Rage Orion card. > I just completed my first powerpc install of debian and X is doing some > weird stuff.
