Hmm. My machine has the same CD-ROM drive it shipped with, an NEC 4X, and it works fine. It has no Mac drives -- by which I assume you mean Apple-branded drives with their magic circuitry -- at all. We had our share of installation problems, though, mostly related to the state of the Debian PowerPC port at the time (around June of 1999). Once we got the system installed, it worked well, with only a couple of hiccups (related to packages that weren't quite ready for prime time). I'm happy to be able to say that as we approach the release of potato, things are getting better and better.
