The whole point of using EXTRAVERSION is to allow you to have more than one kernel (and a matching module tree and System.map file) for a single version of the kernel. It's useful if you're going to, say, try building an all-in-one kernel (no modules) to get started, and then build another kernel with lots of things split out into modules. (It's also useful for keeping separate System.map files for different versions of the kernel.) If you're just compiling a single kernel for a given version, then you don't need to use EXTRAVERSION.
