I believe that it is a much older religious issue: bsd vs sys v (and Linux is not quite either!). I think it was Jobs who created the NextCube (bsd, I believe), and I expect that he is pro-bsd. Religious conversions are difficult :-(. As for Darwin not being open-source, well, I suspect that it is open enough to be useful. Note that it seems that most of the interesting bits of the video driver lives in the kernel. Anything Apple _really_ does not want us to see, they put in the Aqua or Carbon or other propriety layer (for example Airport and Firewire are still in there, as are the interesting bits of the Apple GUI).
