SCSI - Logical unit not ready

I've got a tape drive (OnStream Echo ADR drive) connected to an 
AdvanSys SCSI card.  The hard drive I have connected to the drive 
works fine.

when I try to use the tape drive I get the error:
Logical unit not ready, initializing command required
Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm running Debian unstable on an old SuperMac clone.  Kernel is 
2.2.19 with latest AdvanSys driver and OnStream drivers added.
