Are you a member of group "audio?" Are the appropriate devices (/dev/dsp, /dev/mixer) present? If not, 'cd /dev; ./MAKEDEV audio'. Is the dmasound module inserted (run '/sbin/lsmod')? If not, do 'modprobe dmasound' or 'modprobe dmasound_pmac' depending on your kernel version.
