Are you sure that you compiled the driver for your hw? I had no problem running the 2.4.15-pre2 on the very same hw as you do (600/100). I compiled the GMAC driver in the kernel (not as a module) so I don't have to goof with mod stuff. Me Just Lazy.
Check you dmesg (dmesg | less) to see if the driver gets loaded and eth0 is up (I assume that you are land connected. If airport then it's another story.) You should see a line like that one: eth0: GMAC at xx:xx:xx:xx Let me know how it goes. We'll make it work, don't worry.
