Ok, that worked. I added "video=tdfx:[EMAIL PROTECTED]" to the kernel commands at boot time. So I'm back in a usable X. The console is still hosed and unreadble, but at least I can blindly login and type 'startx' :-) Thanks to everyone who helped! Ron
