I think gdm and the others don't allow root login's by default. Check in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf add or change AllowRoot=true Look through everything you can in /var/log for something strange and try 'last /var/log/faillog' -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
