No, not for a machine only one person uses, i.e. the typical case. Most people aren't running public servers on their personal box, so there's really no need to have them running all the time. Why would it be any less desirable to put a desktop to sleep than a laptop? All that stuff you mention applies to portables as well. And since a desktop system uses a lot more power and makes a lot more noise, I see it as being that much more valuable to have it go to sleep. (Now, if it could also be made to automatically wake up at the time of the next cron task, like my Newton does, that would be ideal. Or even better, monitor its activity and go to sleep automatically if no tasks were available or schedule in the near future. But I'd settle for a manual control. :-) ) -- Michael
