Yes, I downloaded both "debian-30r0-powerpc-binary-1.iso" and
"debian-30r0-powerpc-binary-1_NONUS.iso" to see if it made any difference. I
got the identical problem both times.
I've now got a bit further using a minumum install which is available from
an imaclinux site in .sit format, and therefore doesnt rely on DiskCopy.
Maybe I could do this job with an alternative to DiskCopy. The instructions
say that Toast can do it directly. I couldnt figure out how. I can only burn
a copy of the .iso file.

I assume you mean "debian-30r0-powerpc-binary-1.iso" or
