        Well, you might want to use lame, which is an open source
        encoder for MP3 files that is supposed to be the
        state-of-the-art MP3 encoder, with special attention paid to
        quality of encoded files. It is located at http://lame.sf.net/

        I happen to actually be the upstream maintainer of the Debian
        packaging. Just download the tarball, unpack it, enter the
        main directory, and use something like

        chmod u+x debian/rules
        dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -rfakeroot

        You will obviously have to have some packages installed (like
        fakeroot, debmake etc).

        I am interested in learning improvements that other people
        feel is worth making regarding the packaging of lame.
</plug>

        Hope this helps, Roger...
