I just added the 'linux_keycodes' sysctl to sysctl.conf, my keymap.sh already does the 'sysctl' call.
The one thing in your writeup that really makes me feel like a dolt....booting w/ init=/bin/sh. I really should've thought of that. I use it all the time on our embedded targets.....
