Hello, I suggest you the Apple iBook, it works fine with Debian GNU/Linux and is quite fast for multimedia applications, furthermore it looks pretty and is not heavy in weight as many other x86 laptops.
I've bought my iBook when I had your same doubts, now I wouldn't change
my iBook against no other lapotop, err... well there's one: The PowerBook!
