Finally got around to taking your advice and installed the dri-trunk-sid packages:
xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk_2003.05.04-1_powerpc.deb xlibmesa-gl1-dri-trunk_2003.05.04-1_powerpc.deb drm-trunk-module-src_2003.05.04-1_all.deb and compiled and installed the modules. However, still no joy: it doesn't fail as early as it did but X takes up so much cpu power logging into gnome that the system freezes. This is with a iMac DVD SE Summer 2000 (r128) running unstable. Like I said a while back, DRI has worked very well on this machine under X 4.1 but since the upgrade to unstable, it's failed. The X log says the dri is enabled, but at the price of a frozen system. any other tips?
