Please provide the full /var/log/XFree86.0.log, as it assuredly says at the bottom of the above error message. That said do you have the rights to the /home/steven/.Xauthority directory ? i see you are running startx as root, which is not a good idea per see, but it seems tosearch stuff in your home directory.
