basically, you need to install a sound-server: esd, arts, or jack are your choices, I think. Truth is, I've never gotten any of them to work reliably, so I can't help you solve the problem; but if you work with gnome or kde, and the ibook sound card is well-supported by ALSA (is it?), then you should be able to do it.
