hello all I'm a new list member but not at all new to Linux (using a G3PowerBook with LinuxPPC since 2000). I just bought a new G4 15'' and got stuck during Linux installation (actually, just after the starting point):
Booting my G4 PowerBook (model 5.2, PPC G4 1.1 1GHz, boot rom 4.71f1) the harddisk remains invisible to Linux, while the Combo CD-RW/DVD-R is accessible. System Profile (OSX 10.3) ATA-3 Bus: MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8122 ATA-6 Bus: FUJITSU MHT2060AT (=55GB hard disk) dmesg: ---snip--- Linux version 2.4.18-newpmac ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.95.4. \ 200110002 (Debian prerelease)) #1 Thu Mar 14 22:44:49 EST 2002 [... a lot ...] Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.31 ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx IN from bad port c000 at c00f56ac IN from bad port c100 at c00f56ac [... some lines for cn00 n=2,...,e ...] IN from bad port cf00 at c00f56ac pmac_ide: enabling IDE bus ID 0 hda: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8122, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive ide0 at 0xf4194000-0xf4194007,0xf4104160 in irq 24 hda: Enabling MultiWord DMA 2 ide_pmac: MDMA, cycleTime: 120, accessTime: 90, recTime: 30 ide_pmac: Set MDMA timing for mode 2, reg: 0x00011d26 hda: ATAPI 24X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048 Cache, (U)DMA Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 ---snap--- so it looks like that ide_pmac does not detect my harddisk. I've tried several kernel boot parameters. But as I don't have much experience with this, I'm not really able to test systematically. Does anyone have an idea what might be going on, or where I could find further information? Thanks in advance Bernhard
