Dear all, last night I tried to burn a CD on my PB12" running Sarge (testing) and it was not recognized by cdrecord whereas it used to work seamlessly before. Trying to mount it, mount tells me that /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device (both reading and writing worked perfectly well one week ago). I'm using ide-scsi emulation. My kernel is a recompiled (but not recently) 2.4.23. Reading and Writing still work under MacOS X.
When I try to mount the cdrom for reading, mount says : - as root on the command line (sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /cdrom) mount: /dev/scd0 is not a valid block device - and the same when mounting as a user using fstab entries = mount /dev/cdrom : mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device I have not changed anything in the kernel (no compilation since several weeks) - yaboot - fstab since then. When I read dmesg output, I can see these lines : ... Probing IDE interface ide0... hda: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8122, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hda: Enabling MultiWord DMA 2 Probing IDE interface ide1... hdc: TOSHIBA MK4021GAS, ATA DISK drive hdc: Enabling Ultra DMA 5 ide0 at 0xec203000-0xec203007,0xec203160 on irq 24 ide1 at 0xec209000-0xec209007,0xec209160 on irq 39 hdc: attached ide-disk driver. hdc: 78140160 sectors (40008 MB), CHS=77520/16/63, UDMA(100) Partition check: hdc: [mac] hdc1 hdc2 hdc3 hdc4 hdc5 hdc6 hdc7 hdc8 hdc9 hdc10 hdc11 hdc12 hdc13 hdc14 SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 mesh: configured for synchronous 5 MB/s kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 ... whereas on Jan 15, this latest line (kmod: failed to exec...) did not appear : Probing IDE interface ide0... hda: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8122, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive hda: Enabling MultiWord DMA 2 Probing IDE interface ide1... hdc: TOSHIBA MK4021GAS, ATA DISK drive hdc: Enabling Ultra DMA 5 ide0 at 0xec203000-0xec203007,0xec203160 on irq 24 ide1 at 0xec209000-0xec209007,0xec209160 on irq 39 hdc: attached ide-disk driver. hdc: 78140160 sectors (40008 MB), CHS=77520/16/63, UDMA(100) Partition check: hdc: [mac] hdc1 hdc2 hdc3 hdc4 ... But I have not recompiled my kernel (2.4.23) and modules recently. Has any one encountered such problems in the last few days ? I can't remember having seen an update concerning the CD reader-writer, or anything related when last updating (which I do quite frequently). As a matter of fact, df tells me there is a /dev/shm 'tmpfs' filesystem mounted whereas I do not remember having seen this before neither. And I do not know what it is exactly but perhaps there is no link at all. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on ... tmpfs 314M 0 314M 0% /dev/shm Thanks very much for your help.
