There're lot's of suggestions out there--involving /etc/iftab, /etc/

If you install ifrename (the package) you can put everything
into /etc/iftab and need no init scripts afaict. It just works for me.
I'll try it.
Just curious though, what does your /etc/iftab look like? Do you
use "eth0" despite the
"It is discouraged to try to map interfaces to default
interfaces names
such as eth0, wlan0 or ppp0."
warning in /etc/iftab's man page?
Or....did you go through and change the network settings (/etc/
network/interfaces, etc) produced by the d-i?
