I've tried one of the tools you reported on my Powerbook. All it does is set the nvram volume parameter different from the master volume. Maybe it does something different on the mini - I can send you a debug nvsetenv binary that dumps the entire nvram to check that. Dumping /dev/nvram and comparing the binary blobs directly should even show differences in other places of the nvram (I see two regions that differ, one of these can be assigned to the XPRAM chunk).
