oops, one last "crucial" item:- added the following to sbin/init in the initrd diskram component in order to access my cdrom on /dev/hdc (and possibly other devices):
modprobe -a ide-cd ide-disk sbp2 sr_modHence to reason to copy over modprobe to the initrd in the instructions provided.
