 libao is configured through /etc/libao.conf - take a look if that file
is available for you and contains a sensible default.  It contains this
on my PowerBook G4:

default_driver=alsa

 You can try to take a look if something is using the sound device:

 That is, esd from GNOME is attached to it and quodlibet directly plays,
too.
