Funny, I'd suggest the same thing - then I i sit down and think about how I used to run KDE nicely on 256MB RAM intel PC that was only a 600MHz machine - Suppose one could argue that the demands of the older version of kde didn't need that much resource. Still, I'd like to think that you can get KDE up and running with your current iBook(And with mine)(I've got 640MB ram, but much smaller cpu 500MHz) only I think I need to sit down and understand what I want from my machine, performace wise and start figuring it out from there. I will recompile my kernel - use ppc, take off smp support and other things I dont have and things I dont need - take off generic kernel defaults... I dont know what they are yet though. I suppose I'll need to investigate how to speed my boot time - make hdd more responsive for read/write( hdparm) - I also think I want to disable all the modules that I dont need. Does anyone one think that compiling a kernel with the majority of drivers as modules increases or decreases performace(I'd like to think it decreases as more read/writes on .ko files and more time to load them while booting...hmmm?) Also I rekon I may need to (dont want to really) recompile some things that are resource hogs and compile them with flags that are pertinient to my iBook G3...gentoo sounds like the answer here( shudder ). Does anyone think that more swap will help me( I've got 640 ram ) - and to be honest i think my bottle neck is not the RAM(free -m tells me I'm okay from ram...) its the CPU( so for a cpu centric option like compiling software to suit the suit like a glove may be the best option?) Suggestions? And I like GNOME and KDE and i WANT to use them - I dont want to use the lighter WMs, because they are just not nice and cool. So I want to figure this one out!
