Dear Esteban,
(1) Immediate Solution:
Edit your xorg.conf file manually. In the Device section, change the line
Driver "ati"
to
Driver "radeon"
and you should be good to go. It's long puzzled me that xserver-xorg does
not have a way to select the radeon driver.
(2) Longer solution.
Forgive me if you've done this already, but have you run `dpkg-reconfigure
debconf'? Changing the priority to "low" will make the dpkg-reconfigure
tool ask a lot more questions when setting up packages. Then run
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg again, and you can specify the amount of
memory your card actually has instead of having xorg making a bad guess.
