Not sure if G4 is completely different than G3 here, but did you take a look into the /sys filesystem? I have /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ there and by writing one of the values in scaling_available_frequencies into scaling_cur_freq (1666666 or 833333 for me) I can slow down the machine and make it save power.
