Hi Gunther,

The computer definitely has a good working firewire stack -- I backed up the 
entire laptop to a firewire external before reformatting the computer as 
Debian. The problem is that now that the computer is a (mostly) happy Linux 
machine, it's no longer able to mount external firewire hard drives.

I've read some complains that the newfangled debian PPC firewire drivers have 
been problematic, but those complaints seemed limited to using firewire for 
fancy stuff (video tapedeck device control) not just regular old FW HD mounting…
