Thanks, Clive!  That did the trick.  The "gravelly" sound I was getting turned 
out to be a problem with the mpg321 player.  When I switched to alsaplayer 
instead, the sound was clear and clean...  Probably some kind of bigendian 
trouble with mpg321.
