52x52 of course is what I meant.I also remember testing bigger icons and they would extend beyond the buttons (with the button over the icon). The icon will always start at the lower right corner, no matter the size. I also remember that something like 52x53 or 53x52 is actually the maximum size for the icon, at least so it was on my Power Mac G5 Late-2005.
