Hello again,

I installed the image on iMac G5 (GForce FX 5200) and installation worked with no problem.

I installed LXDE and then, later with apt, MATE. Both work.

Trying to play video, I had error reported about ALSA and had no sound. But testing ScummVM, I had music. And it also works with LXMusic.

I see that cpufreq does not work :-( There are 2 governors: performance (default) and schedutil (that I chose then, and the frequency never decreased). The noisy fan is often activated.

Linux perf had error with the simple test case "perf stat -a sleep 10": there a more or less between 110 and 120% of branch miss rate.

Using VLC, I can play videos but that blocks the application (menus freezed) and the desktop. mplayer always causes a crash at startup with an illegal instruction.

Also note that with an apt uprgade, linux went to version 7.1.4 with success.

Let's come back on the 3D subject:

There is no GPU acceleration (Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200): no 3D support ("Couldn't find matching GLX context).

About the support of the graphics card and 3D acceleration, I installed the package xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and ... that broke the boot with a black screen (and garbage at the bottom). I had to reboot in command line (adding an option in the linux boot command in GRUB: systemd.unit=multi-user.target) and remove it to restore the working situation.

I had these errors:
Xorg[665]: reloc wait_idle failed: -16
Xorg[665]: reloc apply: -16

This is what already reported James Madgwick in 2025-04-20, with the same GeForce and MATE.

That also caused this error: "Application 'mate-panel-desktop' failed to register before timeout".

Then, I switched to LXDE and reinstalled this package. It worked. But that brought no benefit.

At the end:
- Xorg+GLX+DRI2 = OK
- OpenGL = KO

Drivers are OK but that fails to provide a GLX context. With glxinfo, I get:

name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

So, I am pleased to see that it works on my iMac G5 (first time I test on it, usually I do that on my PowerMac G5), even if the 3D support is missing.

Mathias
