OK - done the init=/lib/sysvinit/init bootNo graphical interface - just a blank screen which accepts and echos characters Switched Ctl-Alt-<F2>, logged in, "update" and "dist-upgrade" appeared to go through OK Reboot as normal CUPS now appears to have been updated to 1.7.5 and test prints working.
