Please take a look at LP #872483. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/872483 Trying the suggestion in comment #6 might indicate a hardware problem or not. The techniques in comment #56 are usually advised when it is suspected the printer has a problem with USB and have helped to resolve such issues in the past. See how you go and let us know. You don't have a network port, we suppose, but you could try the parallel port to avoid the power recycling. Regards, Brian.
