Version: 3.17.10+repack0-1

Dear Maintainer,
I did a dist-upgrade this week and now printing and scanning is not
working anymore. The printer is Color Laser Jet MFP M176n.
I found this in the logfile:
Oct 27 19:09:39 worf hpcups[23191]: prnt/hpcups/Hbpl1.cpp 52: Hbpl1 constructor

gimp/sane is saying "Failed to open device '...': Error during device I/O."
hp-setup complains it can't find any printers.
I can ping the printer and access it with a browser.

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

I do. Yours needs a plugin for printing and scanning. Use 'hp-plugin -i'.

Current contents of '/var/lib/hp/hplip.state' file:

installed = 1
eula = 1

hplip has detected you have version 3.17.6 of the plugin installed and
have accepted the eula. It will decline to print and scan until you
install (or it thinks you have installed) version 3.17.10. And, indeed,
you did trick the device into working. :)

The files in hplip-3.17.6-plugin.run and hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run (apart
from two of them) are all the same size. Assuming them to be identical
would not be unreasonable. That (plus a bit of fibbing) is why
everything started working again. I see no bug in Debian's packaging of
hplip or hplip's procedure to ensure devices needing a plugin continue
to work for users when an upgrade is done.
Cheers,
Brian.
