The files in hplip-3.17.6-plugin.run and hplip-3.17.10-plugin.run (apart from two of them) are all the same size. Assuming them to be identical would not be unreasonable. That (plus a bit of fibbing) is why everything started working again. I see no bug in Debian's packaging of hplip or hplip's procedure to ensure devices needing a plugin continue to work for users when an upgrade is done. Cheers, Brian.
