me too, I do use ISO-8859-1 and when I press compose+e+= the euro symbol just came up... And I didn't configure anything about it... but... it only works in gnome (which seems to use UTF8 even if I don't configure it to)... xterm doesn't understand that character... BTW... € (do you see this symbol?)...
